Fraud Control

ClearIP offers a toll fraud prevention service that monitors call traffic in real time and can automatically block fraudulent calls from leaving the network.

ClearIP offers two sets of tools that should be used together to prevent toll fraud:

  1. Blacklists
  2. Fraud triggers.

The blacklist tools can be used to completely block all traffic to specified high fraud risk destinations as well as determine what calls should be monitored by the fraud triggers.

The fraud triggers can be used to monitor calling patterns in real time. If ClearIP detects that a specific calling number or subscriber is making excessive calls to a high cost destination in a certain period of time, then ClearIP can automatically block the affected call source from making additional calls to the same destination for a temporary period of time. For example, if a subscriber’s phone is hacked and the fraudster makes an excessive number of calls to Cuba within a specific period of time, then ClearIP can automatically detect and block the fraudulent traffic.

Types of Fraud

ClearIP can analyze calls for various types of fraud attacks. The different types of fraud that ClearIP is currently able to manage are listed in this section. Fraud control is configured in ClearIP by setting fraud triggers. A fraud trigger describes the conditions that should be met for a fraud attack to be detected and says what action to take as a result.

Set Up Fraud Triggers

ClearIP monitors fraud activity by reviewing the fraud scores of each phone call and looking for suspicious patterns in the fraud scores as configured by your fraud triggers. Although all sharp increases in the fraud score potentially indicate a fraud attack, ClearIP only analyzes calls for a specific type of fraud after you create a fraud trigger for it.

Trigger Events

ClearIP monitors fraudulent activity by reviewing the fraud scores of recent phone calls and looking for suspicious patterns as configured by your fraud triggers. When a fraud trigger’s fraud score threshold is exceeded, a trigger event occurs. A trigger event is ClearIP’s detection of and response to a fraud attack.

Fraud Rates

To detect fraud, ClearIP looks at every call received from the SBC and determines the likelihood of each phone call being fraudulent by calculating both a called and calling fraud score. These fraud scores are used to weight calls for fraud detection.
