Fraud Rates

Introduction

To detect fraud, ClearIP looks at every call received from the SBC and determines the likelihood of each phone call being fraudulent by calculating both a called and calling fraud score. These fraud scores are used to weight calls for fraud detection.

ClearIP calculates a called fraud score by finding the best matching fraud rate for a given called number. A fraud rate is the call termination rate charged by your long-distance provider. The called fraud score is equal to the called fraud rate.

For example, if you are charged a termination rate of $0.1185 per minute to route a call to Latvia as listed in the Default or Custom Fraud Rates, ClearIP would give the call a called fraud score of 0.1185.

As shown in the example, the call’s called fraud score represents the potential financial cost of routing the call.

A calling fraud score is found in a similar way as the called fraud score. A calling fraud score represents the potential financial cost of routing a call back to the original calling number.

Default Fraud Rates

ClearIP is pre-populated with default fraud rates to ensure that fraud scores can be calculated for every call. The default fraud rates are typical wholesale termination rates charged to retail telephone service providers for calls initiated in the United States and Canada. The default fraud rates include breakouts for reserved, unallocated, and invalid telephone numbers since some fraud attacks will target these numbers.

To view the default fraud rates, click on the Configuration tab, and then select the Default Fraud Rates option.

Default fraud rates cannot be changed. However, custom rates can be added to override the default rates. Custom fraud rates take priority over default fraud rates.

We recommend that you use custom fraud rates and not the default rates to best correlate your fraud scores with your true toll fraud risk.

Custom Fraud Rates

Adding custom fraud rates is recommended for customers who originate calls from outside the United States and Canada. The custom fraud rates should be set equal to the call termination rates charged by your long-distance provider. Custom fraud rates take priority over default fraud rates.

To view or add custom fraud rates, click on the Configuration tab, and then select the Custom Fraud Rates option.

You can quickly add multiple custom fraud rates to ClearIP by using the Upload feature under the File button. More information about the Upload feature can be found in the User Interface section in the Documentation.
